LISF Receives Aeromodeling Grant

The Long Island Silent Flyers (LISF) club of Syosset received a $1000 Take Off and Grow (TAG) grant from the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) this past Sunday to introduce youth, newcomers, and community members to the sport of model aviation. The grant will help fund the LISF TAG program, consisting of a two day event at the 8th Annual Radio Control Expo in the Cradle of Aviation, Garden City, Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1st and also a TAG Day to be held at Stillwell Preserve, Syosset on a date to be announced. At the TAG Day the general public will be introduced to the basics of model aviation and they can later enroll in training sessions with the LISFs.

During the LISF TAG Day participants will learn about flying Radio Controlled (RC) model aircraft. Activities will include using a computer-based RC model simulator, a pre-flight briefing, a safety briefing, and actually hands-on flying. After the TAG day, the LISF are inviting participants to return to the club field for training and instruction, under the guidance of experienced model aircraft pilots and instructors.

The LISF were among three clubs in the Academy of Model Aeronautics’ District II, New York and New Jersey to receive a 2012 TAG grant. The grant acknowledges the club’s ongoing commitment to serve the community and provide a family oriented, community based activity. The LISF is over 25 years old and is Chartered with the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Both the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the LISF work to support the educational and recreational activity of model aviation for individuals of all ages.

Founded in 1936, the non-profit Academy of Model Aeronautics is the world’s largest model aviation association, representing a membership of more than 150,000 for the purpose of promotion, development, education, advancement, and safeguarding of modeling activities.

Academy of Model Aeronautics seeks to introduce young men and women to the art and craft of aeromodeling. Through an active educational outreach program, Academy of Model Aeronautics supports teachers and community-based organizations who wish to infuse topics in math, science, and technology with aviation activities. In addition, each year Academy of Model Aeronautics presents Charles H. Grant Scholarships to exceptional students who are active in their community and in modeling.

Since 1970 the Academy of Model Aeronautics has awarded $1 million dollars in scholarships to hundreds of students to study aerospace design and engineering and other aviation related fields.
